Spanish dominance and shocking moment on Jaarbeursplein

UTRECHT – June 29, 2025
The BetCity Arena tournament on Utrecht’s Jaarbeursplein concluded Sunday with thrilling finals and full stands. Spanish players claimed both titles in the men’s and women’s competitions — but a serious incident in the men’s final left a lasting impression on players and spectators alike.

Women’s final: class from the top seeds

The day started with the women’s final, where L. Arruabarrena and J. Bidahorria (1) lived up to their top billing against A. Perez Ortiz and Martha Borrero (2). The first set went to the top seeds 6-3, but their opponents fought back to take the second set 6-4. In the decisive third set, Arruabarrena and Bidahorria shifted gears and cruised to a 6-2 win — a strong and well-deserved victory.

Men’s final: dramatic incident changes the course

The men’s final between top seeds J. Valdes / G. Collado Losada (1) and challengers D. Santigosa Sastre / E. Sanchez Chamero (2) started as expected: tight and high quality. The first set ended 7-6(7) for the number one seeds after a tense tiebreak.

But early in the second set, with the score at 2-1, disaster struck. During a powerful smash by G. Collado Losada, the safety cord on his racket snapped. The racket slipped from his hand and struck E. Sanchez Chamero in the face at close range.

The match was halted immediately. Sanchez Chamero went down and received on-site medical attention. Fortunately, he was able to continue, but the incident clearly affected both teams. Collado Losada, visibly shaken, and his partner managed to win only two more games after the accident.

Their opponents came back strong, taking the second set 6-3 and storming through the third with a crushing 6-0 win in just 21 minutes. A remarkable comeback, both physically and mentally.

Padel passion in the heart of Utrecht

Despite the unfortunate moment, the tournament was a great success overall. With enthusiastic crowds, warm weather, and spectacular rallies, the BetCity Arena once again proved that padel is booming in the Netherlands.
