Padel with the Rebels draws large crowds to Hoogeveen despite changeable weather
Despite heavy rain showers and hail throughout the afternoon, the atmosphere remained remarkably good. Divided across various skill levels, over ninety padel players played a total of 133 matches on the club's six padel courts. The matches lasted twelve minutes per duel, after which the best teams advanced to the finals within their category.

Fourteen Rebels participated in the event, including Glenn Helder, Nasser El Khayati, Diego Biseswar, and Sander de Kramer. Amateur teams had the chance to play against former professional footballers, while visitors could watch from the sidelines or chat with the players present in the canteen.
Due to the bad weather, many visitors sought shelter in the canteen and the party tents surrounding the terrace in between matches. This simultaneously led to many spontaneous encounters and photo opportunities. Young visitors, in particular, took enthusiastic advantage of this.
It was busy along the courts throughout the afternoon. Visitors witnessed not only fierce padel matches but also plenty of emotions and humor on the court. “They remain true footballers,” was shouted laughingly from the sidelines as the enthusiasm visibly rose during several matches.
According to organizer Gert Jan Stevens of Centrista Sportmarketing, despite the weather, the edition can be looked back upon as a success. “Of course, we had hoped for better weather, but ultimately the atmosphere remained good all day. People stayed, the matches could go ahead, and it remained lively for a long time afterwards as well.”

After the sporting part, a large portion of the visitors stayed for live music and delicious food organized by a professional caterer.
With Padellen met de Rebellen, FC de Rebellen and Centrista explicitly aim to create more than just a sports tournament or a casual game of padel against famous former footballers. Developing strong (padel) concepts plays a key role in this. By combining sport, entertainment, experience, and recognizability, an event is created that people remember and that visitors want to be a part of.
According to Stevens, that is also where the strength of the concept lies. “Sport connects people in a natural way. It is precisely that combination of top athletes, amateurs, the public, and entertainment that makes these types of events special. As a result, it becomes more than just a tournament.”
The organization therefore does not rule out a follow-up.
